The Uglies: Why We Look Rough Before Our Periods & How to Combat It

happy galentine's!

If you’ve ever caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror before your period and thought, Wow, who let me out of the house like this?, you’re not alone. Welcome to The Uglies—the not-so-glamorous pre-period phase where bloating, dull skin, and general puffiness make a surprise appearance. Your real friends (the ones who sync to your cycle) will call you out on it, because they’re dealing with it too.

But why does this happen? And more importantly, is there anything we can do about it? Let’s break it down.

Why Do We Look Worse Right Before Our Periods?

Blame it on hormones. In the days leading up to your period, estrogen and progesterone levels take a nosedive, leading to:

Water Retention & Bloating – Your body holds onto extra fluid, making your face and body appear puffier.

Dull, Tired Skin – Decreased estrogen can cause skin to lose some of its glow, while increased oil production may lead to breakouts.

Dark Circles & Puffiness – Hormonal shifts affect sleep quality, making you look more tired than usual.

Fluctuating Blood Sugar – Cravings for sugar and carbs spike, leading to inflammation and possible breakouts.

It’s a perfect storm for looking (and feeling) a little… off.

The Uglies hit, and suddenly I’m transported back to 7th grade—greasy hair, questionable lip gloss, and a t-shirt I refuse to take off.

How to Combat The Uglies

While we can’t stop the hormonal rollercoaster, there are ways to soften its impact and feel a little more like ourselves before our period.

1. Hydration Is Key

Drinking plenty of water helps flush out excess sodium and reduces bloating. Bonus points if you add electrolytes to keep your body balanced.

2. Anti-Inflammatory Foods & Supplements

Load up on foods rich in omega-3s (salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds) and antioxidants (berries, leafy greens) to help fight inflammation and puffiness. Magnesium supplements can also help reduce bloating and improve sleep.

3. Get Moving

Light exercise—like walking, yoga, or Pilates—helps improve circulation and can reduce water retention. Plus, it boosts endorphins, which can counteract PMS mood swings.

4. Ice, Ice, Baby

A quick ice facial (or even just an ice roller) can reduce puffiness and tighten skin in the morning. If you’re feeling extra, try lymphatic drainage massage to depuff your face.

5. Prioritize Sleep

Easier said than done, but quality sleep is your secret weapon. Try magnesium, herbal teas, or even a weighted blanket to help improve sleep before your period.

6. Skincare Reset

Since your skin might be oilier (or weirdly dry), swap in gentle exfoliation and hydration. A clay mask can help with breakouts, while a hydrating serum keeps skin looking fresh.

7. Caffeine (in Moderation)

A little caffeine can help reduce facial puffiness and wake up your skin—but too much can worsen bloating and irritability. Stick to matcha or green tea for a gentler boost.

Embracing The Uglies (With Your Gals)

At the end of the day, The Uglies are just part of the cycle. And the best way to get through them? Having real friends who remind you that, yes, you do look rough, but they do too. Nothing says true friendship like syncing up and suffering together.

So this Galentine’s Day, let’s raise a (decaf) latte to the friends who tell us when we look a little tragic, but love us anyway.
